Original diplomatic correspondence from the French Embassy in Athens, dated 11 July 1942, during the Axis occupation of Greece and the period of Vichy France.
After the fall of France in 1940, the Vichy government continued to maintain diplomatic missions abroad, including in Axis-controlled or Axis-occupied territories. The French Embassy in Athens operated under this special and historically complex status.
This letter is handwritten and signed by Jean Charles-Roux, identified in the signature as “Secrétaire de l’Ambassade” (Secretary of the French Embassy), a senior French diplomatic official.
