Content & Historical Importance

In this letter, Metropolitan Timotheos explains that after careful study of the situation and thorough consideration, he has reached the conclusion that:

1939’s Royal Theatre Athens Letter – Greek National Opera – Signed Renato Mordo

315.00

Rare official pre-World War II institutional letter issued by the Royal Theatre of Greece – Lyric Stage (Greek National Opera), dated 7 December 1939, Athens.

Typed letter on original Royal Theatre letterhead, written in German, and hand-signed by Renato Mordo, who served at the time as Director of the Lyric Stage during its early formative period.

The letter responds to a formal request by a German professor for the loan of theatrical costumes for a performance. After intervention at the General Directorate, the request is officially declined, citing Greek Theatre Law (Article 92), which strictly prohibited the lending of costumes from the Royal Theatre’s collections. The tone is formal and apologetic, reflecting standard institutional procedure rather than personal refusal.

The request had been conveyed to Mordo through his son, acting solely as a personal intermediary. The examination of the matter, the legal reasoning, and the final decision are entirely institutional and issued under Mordo’s authority as Director.
